"Block Party" (Missy's 7th album) still in the works...

As we all know, we haven't seen a legitimate album release from Missy Elliott since 2005's The Cookbook (excluding 2006 greatest-hits compilation Respect M.E.), but hopefully 2014 will finally mark the year for the release of her long-awaited seventh album, tentatively titled Block Party. Since 2007, Missy has worked heavily on the project; dating back to summer of '07, AOL.com initially listed Missy's seventh album title as The Countdown. Later in the year, media sources indicated that there would be less involvement of Timbaland and more extensive production lead by Swizz Beatz, T-Pain, Danja and DJ Toomp. Missy however shot down the rumors, confirmed that the proposed title was false and ensured that Timbaland would play a big role in the album's production.

By late 2007, Missy was featured in the Doritos Collisions advert to help create buzz for the album. In January 2008, Missy released a snippet of the Step Up 2: The Streets soundtrack single "Ching-a-Ling" via her MySpace page. The song would later be granted a 3-D music video alongside remixes featuring Busta Rhymes, Ciara, Precious Latoye, Kid Capri and Boot Camp Clik member Buckshot. The song would later become eligible for honorary positions on Rolling Stone's "100 Best Songs of 2008" and BET's Notarized: Top 100 Videos of 2008.

In February 2008, following appearances on BET's 106 & Park and MTV's TRL, Missy hosted a contest via her official website where she gave fans the opportunity to name her album. She later decided against the idea and named the album FANomenal, in reference to the fans who have stuck with her since day one. Missy then had plans to release the now-leaked "Act a Fool" as the album's lead single, however plans were quickly scrapped and the Danja-produced "Best, Best" was chosen its place, where it managed to spend one week on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs at #94.

In June 2009, Missy Elliott revealed to Elle Magazine that she renamed the album to its current tentative title Block Party primarily because it emphasized the album's "upbeat" direction. In 2010, Missy revealed to MTV that she had plans to release the Souldiggaz-produced "Blow Ya Whistle" as a leading single, however the song was never released as promised. Instead, in September 2012, two Timbaland-produced singles "Triple Threat" and "9th Inning" were released exclusively to iTunes. Because of the lack of extensive promotion and no music video, the songs only managed to chart on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs at #34 and #43 respectively.

Aside from recording Block Party, Missy Elliott continued to keep busy with productions and features since 2007 - she has worked with Keyshia Cole, Monica, Jennifer Hudson, TLC, Fantasia, Danity Kane, Pussycat Dolls, K. Michelle, Ginuwine, Lil Wayne, T-Pain, Queen LatifahJ. Cole, M.I.A., Busta Rhymes, DJ KhaledTrina, Janet Jackson, Eve, Omarion, Ester Dean, Demi Lovato, Ciara, Ruslana, Katy Perry, Beyoncé, G-Dragon, Brenmar, Little Mix, alongside protégées Jazmine Sullivan and Sharaya J.

Missy Elliott has also continued to break records. Since 2007, Missy has added more gold (Little Mix - 'How Ya Doin') & platinum (Keyshia Cole - 'Let It Go') certifications to her award list - expanding her total to over 20 gold & platinum certifications as a producer and artist. She has also attained 10 more Grammy Award nominations - bringing her total to 5 Grammy wins & 33 Grammy nominations - practically tying her with Mariah Carey. But despite all of the recent success, the world hasn't seen much of Missy as a leading artist. Missy's last solo single was 2012's "9th Inning"/"Triple Threat" (featuring Timbaland) which managed to chart on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs, but since then Block Party has remained under the shadows.

In early February 2014, Missy was interviewed on Yahoo!'s "The Yo Show" about the progress of Block Party. Missy stated that she wanted to give fans "100% game-changing records [not] throw out 'microwave' records." She also stated that she needed time to "refresh [because] your brain is like a computer" and "being inspired by things is what I'm grabbing for because music is different now [...] I'm just trying to make sure that what I give is 100% because I know the expectations is high for my fans and myself" - a similar response was echoed in Missy's Hot 97 interview back in September 2012.

So with Missy being on the hush about the album's release date and a new single, we can only hope that new solo Missy singles will see the light of day this year. In the meantime, Missy promised the fans and public that 2014 will be the mark of new produced-records for Monica, Faith Evans, K. Michelle, protégée Sharaya J and Kat Dahlia - on whose debut ('My Garden') Missy will be co-producing several tracks with partner-in-crime Timbaland. Listed after the jump is a number of tracks that have so far been recorded for Missy's Block Party album:

"Triple Threat" (featuring Timbaland) (produced by Timbaland & Jerome "J-Roc" Harmon)
